The Deep House Sessions EP is a natural evolution of Susannah B's longtime obsession with groove. Her cover of Rare Earth's 1971 funk hit "I Just Want to Celebrate" initially featured a powerful, R&B-influenced-vocal reminding us to celebrate each day and remain optimistic even through challenging times. The version by j. wells is a bouncy house track that's the perfect antidote to today's headlines and ready for TikTok. Susannah B's version of The Police's 1981 hit "Spirits in the Material World" (written by Sting) is now lounge-inspired, ambient techno with a silky, percussive vocal and a philosophical message that's still as relevant today as when it was first written 40 years ago. Lastly, "Far More" falls into the techno-house genre, with spiritually-oriented lyrics and a more rave-inspired feel.
Known for her sultry, ethereal vocals and catchy yet sophisticated singer-songwriter pop, Susannah B has released four albums of her own songs -- heard in films, on MTV, on radio stations across the country, and on the Billboard charts. While Susannah B's music has always been a little hard to categorize -- she's been called "chameleonic" and a "powerhouse vocalist" due to her impressive vocal range and stylistic versatility that continually garner rave reviews -- the common denominator in all her work has always been the groove. Even her earlier release, the acclaimed jazz album Girl Gone Wilder!, was inspired by Susannah's unusual rhythmic approaches to the famed jazz standards penned by midcentury composer Alec Wilder.
"I love to dance, and I love the way a good groove can immediately make you want to get up and move," Susannah says. "When I was finishing production on Far More, I knew that I wanted to find a young DJ/producer who could pick up the tempo and remix the songs into club-ready cuts. Lucky for me, j. wells understood exactly where I wanted to take the music."
j. wells is a Brooklyn-based electronic music producer who's been involved in the techno, house and hip hop scene for several years. A classically trained musician, he is a graduate of New York University in Music Technology and is heavily influenced by the dance music scenes of Berlin, Detroit and New York City. His tracks bring a minimalist, experimental approach and make unique use of vintage synthesizers and analog drums, vinyl cuts and vocal edits.
